Discoid lupus treatment
Written by lu on December 17, 2011 – 11:53 am -Injections are usually the more effective option. Also, creams that are calcineurin inhibitors will assist in treating lesions, such as pimecrolimus cream and tacrolimus ointment.
Cortisone ointment applied to the skin in the involved areas will often improve the lesions and slow down their progression. Cortisone injections into the lesions will also treat discoid lupus and usually are more effective than the ointment form of cortisone.
None of the patients had had improvements in their lesions from any previous treatments, which included steroids, antimalarials, dapsone, azathioprine, cyclosporine, and methotrexate. Each of the patients then received weekly injections of Raptiva, with the doses adjusted to their weight (1mg/kg). The average period of treatment was 14.5 months.
